Rethinking Thirty

I said goodbye to my 20s on Wednesday and entered a new era of adulthood. I did it with a smile and a skip in my step, though.

I’m quite pleased to announce that I am now THIRTY.

Thirty. That has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

Thirty is one of those milestones that seems to be rarely anticipated with joy and excitement. I understand why. The fine lines, the wrinkles, the stubborn pounds. The signs of a bit of age showing here and there. A woman likes to feel beautiful. Wrinkles don’t do much for that.

I’ve decided to be okay with knowing that I’m no longer living a 21-year old form. This is a temporary dwelling place, anyhow. Instead, I’ve been looking forward to thirty and the mature feeling that it brings. I’m all grown up now.

I’ve felt out-of-place as a 20-something. I was blessed to marry young, and subsequently start a family young. I feel like I fit in better being thirty.

But I think there’s more to thirty than just my own sense of belonging. I’m looking forward to blessings during my thirtieth year. Why?

Joseph was thirty years old when he began to rule in Egypt (Genesis 41:46).

David was thirty years old when he began to reign (2 Samuel 5:4).

John the Baptist was about thirty years old when he began to preach, being only six months older that Jesus (Luke 1:36).

Jesus Himself was around thirty years old when His ministry began (Luke 3:23).

I don’t expect my thirtieth year to compare to those of these men of God and the Savior Himself. But I am expecting blessings, and if in my thirtieth year I can have a better rule over the sin that likes to creep into my heart, I will rejoice in that!

Maybe you are nearing thirty, or passed it a while back. Don’t be afraid to rethink it. Look at what God has done through the Scriptures with those who turned thirty!

Thirty doesn’t have to be so bad.
